Artist Statement

My work extends from photography and photocollage, to printmaking, drawing, writing, embroidery, installation and participatory socially engaged practice. I am interested in the active role artists can play in societies, workplaces, organisations and communities, as well as art’s capacity to bond, connect and unite us across huge diversities and contrasts.  In my socially engaged practice I like to take creativity into spaces where art isn’t expected, and use creativity as a tool to expand boundaries and possibilities whilst ensuring art remains a challenge but not a demand.  Creativity for me is about working with and within the in-between, where becoming happens.

My work reflects my fascination for the natural world in forms such as trees, rivers, seeds and food as physical and aesthetic objects, as well as a direct and symbolic metaphor for our human connection to earth and each other.

This theme of connection is fundamental in my work - as a discipline and practice. In our wandering planet, it’s important for me to learn how to observe consciously, becoming aware of the dialogue between things and people.

I value time spent in nature, with plant life, water and other natural environments, as well as human social spaces. I grew up in a culture where food played a significant role in my family, and in community relationships, gatherings, celebrations and rituals. In this context, nature and food take on a social and spiritual dimension. I strongly believe nature has the capacity to teach and nourish us. As a result, my work looks to explore at the intersection of the natural, the cultural, the social and the spiritual.
